A Manifesto for Radical Love of the Earth

With all authoritarian confidence, I declare: if anything saves us, it won't be progress or technocracy, nor will it be spirituality or esotericism. Radical love of the earth has the best chance. When we touch a stone, when we sit on the grass, when we carefully avoid lichens on a path—there is no sacredness in this, but there is love. The technocratic world is as distanced from nature as the world of esoteric knowledge. A sacred attitude toward nature creates distance: by deifying a tree, we choose to worship it as sacred, but not to understand its processes; in carefully understanding the biochemical processes in the soil lies love. This manifesto is a call to join my practice of radical love for nature through understanding its processes, through the scientific and poetic, through a space for observing natural processes (the ecosystem), rather than processes where the main actor is human (the garden). Let us radically love nature and be careful and observant of it. Let us see in a static stone an agent of the environment that moves in geological time; let us see in a weed a pioneer that revives the ecosystem.

Way 2. Try the skin of the rock on you

A practice: take a look at the skin of the rock next to you. Notice the form, the color, then put your attention to the lichens and mosses — does they look familiar, could you coun different types of them? What is the color pallete of the skin of the rock? Can you do imagine this exact skin of the rock covering your body?

Way 3. To die

A task: try to imagine the day you die in all details, write it down.

On the day I die,

I'll be among beautiful rocks, cold to the eye but with a warm breeze, and sometimes a light salty spray. In tall grass or moss—having already said goodbye to my daughter, to her son, to my husband, surrounded by the spirits of my ancestors and seagulls. I'll be wearing my favorite clothes that suit me, and all my rings. I'll sing, draw, dance in the wind, and my favorite food will be with me—syrniki, yogurt, blueberries, lots of blueberries. And the moss and the light on it will be amazingly beautiful, as always, when I so longed to live.

Way 4. Organoleptic

Repeat the exercise from the Way 2 but allow yourself to be more playful and creative. Try to shift your observation from the scientific way to more artistic one: touch the rock with eyes closed to try to imagine its temper from the sensation, lick it to taste it, move around the rock like if you are dancing with it, try to remember the color pallet of it, and if you want — paint it or write about it.

Way 5. Geomoprhological: to comprehend the temporality of a rock

A task: to find the moment of you meeting a rock and try to observe its history before and after you

What does it mean to breathe with a stone?

It's breathing slowly

through time

geological time

breath of a stone —

its movement down a slope

its life in the body of a glacier,

until the glacier melts —

and afterward

too,

movement

almost imperceptible to the living eye

it's the movement of a stone within the earth's crust

when stones

become again

when magma flows

pours to the earth's surface

and solidifies into stone

and so on in a circle

imagine — these stones

could have been part

of a mountain system

somewhere in distant Siberia

and now you're leaning against them

their journey isn't over,

this is only a pause

for both of you

you leaned against the stone

to breath out

and finish your tea with mun'ya and coca

behind you there are millions of years

slowly flowing

rolling,

almost motionless

movements

of the stone

Way 6. Comparative analysis

A task: compare a body conditions and sensations in you and in the rock

What is love to me

if not a word

that cuts off itself with a stone

What is the earth to me

if not the embodiment

of love

What is warmth to me

if not a hot water bottle in my bed

What is the ability to feel

if not confusion in the body

Movement in the intestines

I am these stones

I am all movement

I am all feeling

I am therefore love

Way 7. To meditate with the rock

Part 1. Practice of reconnecting with the landscape

Go to a natural area near you.

Look around: how much human activity do you think is visible? If so, move on. When you find a spot that's the least affected by humans among those nearby, stop.

Try to find a uniform environment: one where the surface and vegetation don't vary greatly within the area. While some elements may differ, it could be a repeating pattern, for example, a gently sloping surface with rock outcrops or boulders, but this feature is common throughout the entire area. This type of area is also suitable for practice.

Next, I suggest exploring the area with your attention. The goal of this exploration is deep familiarization, a very important part of the practice. Start by noticing the surface, exploring it with your attention and feet: how flat is the surface, is there a slope, are there any bumps or rocks. If there are rocks, evaluate them in comparison to your body (larger, smaller, and by how much). What happens when you touch a stone?

How does it feel?

What's its surface like?

How rough is it?

How pleasant is it to run your hands over it?

Now let's pay attention to colors: what colors do you see around you? What shades are noticeable in the rocks, soil, and vegetation?

If you touch the soil, is it loose and sandy?

If so, does it match the colors of the surrounding rocks or those you've seen in the surrounding area/buildings? If you can't answer this question, try finding grains of sand in the soil and examining their color.

If the soil is muddy, smear the back of your hand with it, observe the color, and pay attention to how it feels. Is there a lot of blackness in the soil? If so, it's likely fertile and contains special humic acids that are responsible for life; they form over a long period of time. This means you're lucky, the soil hasn't yet been depleted, hasn't been destroyed by human activity, or the climate allows it to form easily.

If there's no soil but you're in a natural environment, it could be a sandy or rocky landscape (beach, dunes, desert, mountains), where life forms without visible soil. Interact with this top layer as the environment allows (touch and move the sand, roll pebbles, dig into the soil with your finger, knead the clay, pick at rocks). Try recording your responses verbally or verbally—they will be a preliminary description of the landscape.

Part 2. Practice of paying attention to the landscape

Pay attention to the plants around you—how exactly are they arranged, how many different types of plants do you see, and is there a pattern to their arrangement?

When examining living things, we pay attention to mosses and lichens on rocks, moss on the ground, herbaceous plants, sedges and grasses (protruding stems with or without spikelets), flowering plants, shrubs, bushes, and trees. It would be great if you could assess how abundant each of these types is, how they are arranged, and how suitable the living conditions are for their well-being.

I also suggest interacting with each type—looking at it, gently touching it, paying attention to its texture, color, foliage type, shape, surface, and the sensations it leaves behind.

Perhaps you'll develop a favorite type and want to spend more time with it—allow yourself time to pay attention to this urge and be with this living or non-living element of the environment.

Part 3. Practice of meditation with the landscape

The next part of the practice will require even more contemplation, as well as the use of your imagination.

-I suggest choosing one of the elements you've explored and spending the next 5 minutes meditating with it. In this meditation, try this: first, sit or lie down comfortably, ensure the position and location are secure, then set a timer for 5 minutes.

Next, close your eyes, then even out your breathing and scan your body with your inner attention, part by part, then scan the body faster, then collect sensation from the entire shell of the body and hold the whole body in your attention for a short time, half a minute or less.Try to create a field of inner vision in which your body exists.

Choose an object around you, preferably part of natural landscape.

Feel the soil/grass/rocks beneath it.

Next, in the field of inner vision where your body exists, imagine the object you've chosen—a blade of grass, a moss cushion, a stone, soil, a tree, anything you've explored previously. Keep the sensation/image of your body and this object in your consciousness.

Now try to recall the soil/surface that connects you and the object. Feel how the surface connects you to this object. When you've completed your meditation practice, open your eyes and notice this object in visible reality.

Next, when you return from meditation, try to pay equal attention to all other objects around you, including the first one you chose and yourself. Try spending a few minutes surveying your area and distributing equal attention to all elements. If thoughts arise, let them go; simply focus on the attention you're directing.

Now imagine that this attention is indivisible, filling the entire environment and spreading between all elements like a single electromagnetic field. Maintain this field for a while, without excluding yourself from it: you are the source of this attention, and you are also its participant and observer. Maintain this triple state as long as possible.

Now that you've completed the most difficult part, exhale and distract yourself by looking at the sky or your body. Your attention can be pulsating; it shouldn't be a part of the process with uniform intensity. Prepare yourself for the next part of the practice.

Part 4. Practice of being with the landscape

Now I invite you to move in space (as your body prompts), but with the knowledge you've gained from observing the environment.

As you move, try to maintain a sense of gentle attention, recall the sensation within the meditation, recall the shared field of which you were a part in the previous practice. Move with attention to this memory.

I'll add a few things: lichens recover very slowly, mosses are more resilient, but as long as their structure isn't severely damaged, grasses grow faster, but if your movement breaks their stems, they'll have a hard time recovering. The soil cover and its integrity are the most challenging—soil formation is a slow process, and the entire viability of the ecosystem depends on it. Try not to disturb the natural order.

Tasks for independent completion

1. complete the tasks and practices from above while you are in the nature

2. think about your own ways to become the rock or to love the rock (which is the same for me)

3. share your ways to love the rock with me
